If you needed evidence that an increasing number of businesses are embracing Twitter…here it is.

Business News Daily found that the usage of Twitter among small businesses had doubled from the third quarter of 2009 to the fourth quarter of 2010, reflecting a growing comfort level with the social media tool that profoundly challenges William Shakespeare’s assertion that “brevity is the soul of wit.”

While it may not be the home of the literary geniuses of tomorrow, Twitter is, as we’ve said many times before, is a great way to reach customers and promote your business in a way that avoids the classic marketing pitfall of being overly eager about your company and products.

The only downside to this news is that for some reason, only 19 percent of those businesses surveyed were using Twitter at all, compared to 48 percent for Facebook. Both tools are extremely valuable, but Twitter is the more agile option than Facebook, offering the ability to more quickly blast things out and have them picked up by a host of other users. We’ll cover that particular perk in more detail soon at Biz Engine, but in the meantime, sign up for Twitter.
