Saying that you’ve never been rejected is like saying that the sky is never blue. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Whether it’s asking for a piece of candy in your younger years, to not having your business proposal go through, it happens.
I remember from my experience in sales that you have more strike-outs than homeruns. But, did you know that when you strike out, you can actually learn from it so, in the end, you can make more homeruns? Tony Robbins once said, “There is no such thing as failure. There are only results.” A lot of people understand this quote, but don’t really grasp the true concept of owning up to their failure.
So the next time you experience failure, here’s a battle sheet on what to do when things don’t go as planned.
There’s a reason why you failed, and some reasons can be unknown or misinterpreted to you. The best thing to do is to ask the source why you didn’t succeed in their eyes. Even if it’s a pitch, ask the person what you could have done better to tailor it to their needs. One thing you absolutely need to do is listen to the feedback, and I mean really listen. Pay close attention to every word rather than just waiting for your turn to speak. What did the person not like about performance or product?
Now that you have been given feedback on what was right and what was wrong, take the next step. If you’re being told that what you did wasn’t exactly good enough for your audience, it won’t take much to throw you off track and get in your head. Whatever you do, don’t let it get to you. Analyze the feedback that resonated the most and take a step forward. Don’t take out your aggression on someone telling you you’re wrong or that you need to do better. Instead, use that energy to backtrack and improve.
After analyzing your feedback make adjustments to your performance. If you want to be successful, you have to want it and part of that means rethinking your strategy. Be ready to switch lanes and even hit the brakes a couple of times on the road to your success, but do know that there will always be an end destination.
The first step to doing any of this it to have the drive to self-improve, whether it’s perfecting your pitch, or changing your business model. Always be willing to change and keep telling rejection to “bring it.”
